Traumatic Brain Injury

Someone that gets hit in the head, or has their head jolted or penetrated by an object can suffer what is called Traumatic Brain Injury or TBI.

TBI can result from falls, motor vehicle accidents, or being hit by something which causes the brain to move and twist in the skull. TBI can also result from something entering the brain such as a bullet or shrapnel. Symptoms of traumatic brain injury can vary from mild to severe. If the injury is mild a person can experience, ringing in their ears, headache, confusion dizziness and fatigue. There may be a brief loss of consciousness.

In more severe cases of TBI, the headache may not go away, the person may feel nauseated or begin vomiting. They may experience confusion, slurred speech, loss of coordination, and seizures. In milder cases a slow return to normal activities during the month following the injury may be what is needed. However, if symptoms are more severe or they persist longer than a month, a person may need medical stabilization, medication, or surgery. TBI needs to be taken seriously.
